The island's economy depends mostly on the extraction of phosphate, which is found in the center of the atoll. There are two cantilevers built on the coast, enabling phosphate to be loaded on the ships. The first of two cantilevers was built between the world wars. Tourist can visit both of the cantilevers. Due to the phosphate dust, the mining center landscape looks like the one on the moon, which visitors find interesting.
During World War II Japanese occupied the island, leaving behind guns and bunkers. Command Ridge, where they kept watch, is Nauru's highest point – the island is almost completely flat, which means Command Ridge offers not only rusty guns and two large rotating six-barrel weapons that once fired 40kg (90oz) shells, but also a great view. It's permitted to enter the communication bunker with a flashlight, which visitors find interesting, especially because there are some Japanese writings on the wall.
Because of its coral reefs, Nauru has great potential of becoming a diving paradise. There is also possibility of deep-sea fishing. Nauru has beautiful beaches, so the visitors not into the water activities will feel satisfied as well. Tourists have to be very cautious when swimming or doing other water activities because there are dangerous currents. Beauty of Nauru 's best, white-sand beach Anibare Bay , adjacent to Buada Lagoon, many enjoy both during day and night.
It's possible to explore the ruins of former President's House, burned down in 2001 by a furious mob angry with government's bad fund management.
Because of many bars, casinos and restaurants offering delicious Thai, Indian and Chinese food, the capital, Yaren, is lively place, especially at night.
Transport
There's practically no other way than getting here by air. A sealed road 18 km (12 miles) circles the island, however, there are no taxis, hire cars or public transport, but you might negotiate for a car hire from locals. The main road is paved, but the smaller ones are not, and there is no organized road assistance. Driving in the night is very dangerous with animals and pedestrians walking in the road.
Climate
Always hot and humid, it has average temperature of 25°C (77°F). Cyclone season lasts from November to February, so it's not advisable to visit in that period.
